Sparking students’ passions for Computer Science

Computer science (CS) skills are becoming essential for every student’s future. But not every student gets equal opportunities to learn them.

So for Computer Science Education Week 2021, we launched Code with Google’s ‘Ignite their future’ campaign – giving K-12 teachers the resources to empower and inspire young people across America.

Not everyone sees the opportunities

Problem solving. Coding. Creative thinking. CS education gives students the skills to unlock new career and life opportunities. However, many young people don’t think CS is for them.

We needed to overcome the challenges of perception and access – especially for students from historically marginalised groups.

Igniting a brighter future

Our ‘Ignite their future’ creative platform brought Code with Google’s free teacher resources and coding activities into a broader campaign, led by diverse influencers talking about their own CS journeys – from runway model and software developer Lyndsey Scott, to the coding drag queen Anna Lytical, and ‘American Horror Story’ actress and businesswoman Angelica Ross.

Our strikingly animated visual approach merged 2D and 3D worlds to show teachers how CS sparks possibilities for their students in all kinds of subjects, including music, art and history; nature and outdoor sports; and science, astronomy and medicine.

The Results

‘Ignite their future’ brought Code with Google’s Computer Science resources into more classrooms than ever before. More than 36,000 K-12 students participated in Ignite Experiences, up from 6,000 who joined a similar program in 2020.
